John Kusku/ Skiing Beyond Limits

Finding a sport you love is life-changing. Staying active and being part of a sports community has an immeasurable impact on well-being—offering camaraderie, motivation, and a shared sense of purpose. The support and encouragement from fellow athletes foster confidence, resilience, and a deep sense of belonging, reminding me that I am never alone in my journey.
As a blind athlete, I ski with a guide who provides constant verbal cues, enabling me to compete in biathlon and cross-country races. But my disability doesn’t define my limits—determination, adaptability, and the willingness to push beyond expectations do. Every challenge presents an opportunity to grow stronger, proving that barriers exist only when we accept them. Every time I hit the trails, I challenge perceptions and inspire people to rethink what true ability means.

Pearl Outlaw/Finding Freedom on Skis

I never expected to fall in love with Nordic skiing. Before 2019, I had never even seen a pair of skis in person. But from the moment I first glided over the snow, felt the rush of speed down a hill, and listened to the quiet sounds of the forest, something clicked.

I used to love trail running, and while running tethered to a guide was something, it wasn’t the same. I didn’t realize how much I missed the freedom of moving through the woods—until I found it again on skis. Learning to ski with my guide in front of me changed everything. It allowed me to reconnect with nature in a way I thought was lost forever. Skiing has given me back a sense of independence, and my guide skiers make that possible.

As a visually impaired person and athlete so many limitations inherently exist.  Finding independence becomes so vital for both our mental and physical health. Nordic skiing promotes that feeling of independence coupled with immense connectivity and community.  Typically as a visually impaired athlete we are tethered such is the fact with running. Or on the back of a tandem such as with cycling.  However, in nordic skiing we are on our own with simply vocal guidance from our guides. It is up to ski on our own exercising proper technique. It feels as if we are dancing on the snow, gaining both tactile and audible feedback that just warms the soul! Couple all of this with some oft he best fitness one couple possibly have!

These stories represent just a few of the incredible visually impaired skiers pushing boundaries and redefining possibilities. But they are not the only ones. So many more are eager to experience the freedom, empowerment, and community that sports provide. Together, we can add more inspiring experiences here—ensuring that every visually impaired athlete has the opportunity to thrive.
